Important facts

Plumbing insurance is a type of insurance that a licensed plumber is required to have by law. Plumbers have important obligations to your owners corporation where they worked on your building.

Plumbing insurance.

Plumbing insurance is a type of insurance that a licensed plumber is required to have by law to carry out plumbing work that requires a compliance certificate. Currently any plumbing work that has a total value of $750 or more, including labour, materials, appliances, and fixtures requires a compliance certificate to be issued.

This insurance covers things like fixing any defective work that does not comply with plumbing standards, trade practices liability, consequential loss and non-completion, and public liability in case the work carried out results in personal injury or damage to property.

The insurance coverage should last for a period of 6 years, even if the plumber stops working as a licensed practitioner.

If you have any concerns about the plumbing work carried out by a licensed plumber, you should contact the plumber first to discuss your concerns and give them an opportunity to reassess and rectify any defective work. If the issue is not resolved, you can lodge a complaint with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) at (www.vba.vic.gov.au). The VBA has the power to compel plumbing practitioners to rectify any defective or non-compliant plumbing work that it identifies.
